Године Господње 1873. у Чачку се родила једна од највећих српских сликарки – Надежда Петровић. Да, то је она коју срећемо на новчаници од 200 динара.

Свестрана смелост која је неодвојив део њеног опуса на српске просторе најпре доноси импресионизам, фовизам, а потом и експресионизам. Врло често несхваћен у конзервативној средини тадашње краљевине Србије, њен експериментални и отворени приступ сликарству био је авангардан. Као основне елементе грађења слике наводила је боју, и приказ светлости. Неговала је јарку палету интензивних боја, а слике је градила брзим и снажним потезима који зраче самопоуздањем. Доминирају црвена, жута и плава, које се сударају у пастуозним намазима стварајући чудесне призоре јарких и продорних фовистичких пејзажа, који су покаткад наговештавали појаву апстракције (и то истодобно кад и Кандински).

Дружећи се са знаменитим људима свог времена, излагала је у Београду, Загребу, Љубљани, Паризу, Риму. Следећи своје панславистичке идеје, основала је најстарију југословенску ликовну колонију – Ладу, у Сићеву крај Ниша 1905. године. Она се, својим врхунским познавањем набујајућих праваца европског сликарства, залаже за сликарство које излази из окова академизма – из школа, атељеа, институција – прелазећи на теренски – директан приступ – сликању у самој природи, непосредно, на лицу места. Поред тога, била је један од оснивача чувеног хуманитарног друштва – Кола српских сестара.

Но, то није све – ова храбра жена, у надолазећим околностима најпре Балканских, а касније и Првог светског рата, открива и своју родољубиву страну. Најпре као први ратни фотограф, она бележи документарне фотографије из борбених страхота и ратних страдања. Потом и као болничарка, негује борце током Великог рата. Посвећена и пожртвована до самога краја, умрла је 1915. године од пегавог тифуса, на дужности, у првим редовима фронта.
